Records Are Made

RECORDS ARE MADE to be broken. In the 2002 Olympic Games, speed skater Derek Parra discovered a record might last only minutes.

At first glance, the 31-year-old American seemed unlikely to achieve the world’s fastest time in the 5,000-meter race. The former inline skater, who converted to ice in 1997, had never finished above 14th in World Cup competition. His only fame had come in the opening ceremonies when he joined seven other athletes carrying the World Trade Center flag into Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

But the Utah Olympic Oval proved to be a speedy track. At 4,675 feet above sea level, the high-altitude–hardened ice, the dry air, and the low pressure made records fall.

Prior to his competition, Parra downed a package of Fig Newton cookies—his favorite treat. The combination of fast ice and figs proved successful for the Home Depot employee. Shaving almost 15 seconds off his personal best, Derek finished the course in 6:17.98, eclipsing the world mark of 6:18.72.

But gold-medal favorite Jochem Uytdehaage had yet to compete. Taking advantage of the conditions, the Dutch skater blazed the 5,000 meters in 6:14.66, claiming first place and the record.

Although Parra held the world record for less than 30 minutes, his time won second place. His silver medal marked the first time an American had placed in the men’s 5,000 meters since Eric Heiden won the gold in 1980.

POINT No one gave Derek Parra much of a chance for a medal in 5,000-meter speed skating. But the American didn’t let anyone intimidate him. He showed no fear. He focused on his own race. Eating his trademark snack gave Derek a feeling of peace, a boost of energy, and the strength for an outstanding performance.

God wants to strengthen his followers—and we don’t even have to eat a snack. God told the prophet Isaiah not to be afraid or confused. His strength would get his people through their troubles. With God, they would overcome.
