What Happens

WHAT HAPPENS when you combine the pure athletic talent of skateboarder Tony Hawk and the flawless consistency of Andy Macdonald? Answer: You get one dynamic, gold-medal-winning duo!

Hawk and Macdonald combined efforts in the 1999 Summer X Games vert doubles to take home their third straight gold medal. The fans never wondered which team would come out on top; the only question was: “What will they do next?”

By themselves, these two pro skaters would make any event fun to watch. But as a team, they were simply unstoppable. As in any amazing performance, the stars saved the best for last. Hawk nailed a giant 720 while soaring over Macdonald, who was spinning a 360 indy. This mind-blowing stunt was followed by a board transfer where Hawk—in the middle of a 50-50 grind—jumped onto Macdonald’s board to ride out the rest of his slide on top of the halfpipe.

Hawk and Macdonald, both working together with precise timing, gave an amazing performance and rode away with some more hardware.

POINT Tony Hawk and Andy Macdonald knew that they had enough talent together to take on anyone. They also knew that talent alone wasn’t going to get them to the top. They had to be creative. They had to build on each other’s abilities. They had to work together as a team.

Do you think Hawk would have made it far in the vert doubles by himself? Not only would he have been disqualified, he would have missed out on another X Games gold medal.

Just like Hawk needed a friend to help him accomplish his goal, we need friends to help us live out our Christian life. God never intended for us to be alone. He gave us Christian friends at school or church to encourage us and to help us achieve more than we ever could alone. We must work together with our friends to pursue great things for God.
