A Perfect Scenario

You are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.

Matthew 5:48

When it comes to writing for publication, one of the most important aspects of the process is rewriting. A writer doesn’t necessarily rewrite a piece because there is something wrong with it. Often the rewriting is part of making a piece the best it can possibly be. As one writer said, “When my writing is not good, I typically rework it at least five times. When my writing is good, I rework it only four times.” In other words, rewriting is essential if the result is to be the best it can be.

A story is told that after film producer Samuel Goldwyn read the first script submitted by a new writer attached to the movie studio, he summoned the hopeful employee to his desk.

“This is a perfect scenario,” said Goldwyn. “It is the first time in my life that I’ve seen a perfect scenario. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. I want you to have a hundred copies made so I can distribute them to all the other writers so that everybody can see a really perfect script.”

“Really, Mr. Goldwyn?” responded the surprised writer as he turned to go and do the director’s bidding.

“Yes,” said Goldwyn. “And hurry before I start rewriting it!”

Our heavenly Father, as the author of our lives, rewrites and redeems the scenarios in which we live, not always because there is something wrong with us, but because he wants us to become the very best we can be.

The good news is that God sees us as perfect even though he knows we’re not, because he looks at us through rose-colored glasses—stained by the precious blood of his Son on the cross.

Thank you, Father, for seeing us as we are in Christ. We are humbled in your presence and by your marvelous grace to us. Amen.
