Fairy Faith

Jesus was filled with the joy of the Holy Spirit, and he said, “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike.”

Luke 10:21

My own children are almost grown. Barb brought her little four-year-old granddaughter to Bible study. The little angel played in the room next to the living room where we were meeting. Every half hour the little beauty skipped in and whispered in her mommy’s ear.

Isn’t this little girl the prettiest girl in town? I wondered. Her hair was loosely plaited. Her eyes were friendly. Her skin was so young and clear. Her skip was as light as a fairy’s.

After study, we all went out to lunch. In the restaurant I sat next to the small fairy.

“Where did you get your beautiful sweater?” I asked her. “It’s so pretty. I really like the flowers on the front.” And I really did. It looked handmade.

She looked up at me and smiled a big smile. I leaned over to confide, in a girlish shared interest in fashion, “I wish I had a sweater just like yours.”

Then the magic happened. The fairy princess with her magic smile granted my wish: “My grandmother will get you one, too, for your birthday!”

This pronouncement was made with perfect faith in her loving and able grandmother. We hardly knew each other. Yet, with all the love in the world, she granted my wish.

And with all the love in the world, Jesus Christ has granted us his amazing grace, his astonishing kindness, and his eternal salvation, all of which we can receive by faith in his ability, as the Son of the living God, to do so.
