Home for Christmas

All the people returned to their homes, and David turned and went home to bless his own family.

1 Chronicles 16:43

An old man in Phoenix called his son in New York a few days before Christmas and said, “Son, this is Dad. I hate to ruin your day, but I have to tell you that your mom and I are divorcing. Forty-five years of misery is enough! I just can’t take it anymore.”

“Pop, what are you talking about?” the son shouted.

“It’s true. We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the father said. “Frankly, we’re sick of each other, and I’m tired of talking about this, so you can call your sister in Chicago and tell her the bad news. Good-bye.”

Frantic, the son called his sister and told her what their dad had said. The sister exploded on the phone: “No way! They are not getting divorced! Don’t worry. I’ll take care of this.”

Immediately the daughter called her parents’ home in Phoenix and screamed at her father, “Dad, are you crazy? You are not getting divorced. Don’t you do a single thing until I get there. I’m calling my brother back, and we will both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t you do a thing. Do you hear me?” And she hung up.

She called her brother and said, “Get airline tickets. We have to go home and straighten out this mess. I’ll see you there.”

“Okay, Sis, I’ll be there tomorrow.”

After the father hung up the phone from the call with his daughter, he turned to his wife and smiled. “It’s all set,” he said. “Get everything ready. They’re coming for Christmas, and they’re paying their own way.”

Heavenly Father, thank you for this time of year when we get together with our families. And we look forward to the day we can be at home with you forever. Amen.
