Seeking Wisdom

Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do!And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.

Proverbs 4:7

You may remember the Bible story of Solomon. He had a dream in which God promised to give him anything he requested. Solomon could have asked for great wealth or fame or good fortune. He could have had anything in the world he wanted. Instead, Solomon asked God to make him wise so he could rule God’s people well.

God was so pleased with Solomon’s request that he made Solomon the wisest man who ever lived. It is no surprise that Solomon wrote the words above about getting wisdom. It reminds me of this story:

One day three men were hiking and unexpectedly came upon a large, raging river. They needed to get to the other side, but they had no idea how to do it.

The first man prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength to cross this river.”

Poof! God gave him big arms and strong legs, and he was able to swim across the river in about two hours, after almost drowning a couple of times.

Seeing this, the second man prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength and the tools to cross this river.”

Poof! God provided a rowboat, and the man was able to row across the river in about an hour, after almost capsizing a couple of times.

The third man had seen how this worked out for the other two men, so he also prayed to God, saying, “Please, God, give me the strength and the tools and the wisdom to cross this river.”

And poof! God turned him into a woman. She looked at the map, hiked upstream a hundred yards, and then walked across the bridge.

O Lord, I pray that you will give me a double portion of your wisdom so that I will always live according to your precepts and guidelines. Amen.
