Showers of Blessings

The godly are showered with blessings.

Proverbs 10:6

For weeks I had been buried in work and deadlines, and I was so tired. Finally, I just had to take a break. So my friend Charlotte and I decided to take a weekend road trip. We headed south from Fort Worth toward one of our favorite shopping towns—Salado—a quaint little community with numerous curio shops, rare bookstores, and our favorite home decor store, called Horsefeathers.

En route I complained to Charlotte about all the projects and deadlines I had been juggling. She listened patiently, as always, and tried to soothe my frustration. In the midst of my tirade, we came up behind an older RV that had obviously spent lots of time on the road. A bumper sticker simply said, “Count Your Blessings.”

That made me pause for a moment, and I realized how richly blessed with work and income I had been over the past few months. I stopped complaining and turned up the music in the car. For the next two hours, we talked about other things, including the beautiful Texas wildflowers that were blooming along the roadside: bluebonnets (my favorites), Indian paintbrush, and crimson clover.

We had a pleasant evening in Salado with dinner at an outdoor restaurant, followed by a movie, then rest at a delightful bed-and-breakfast. The next morning, we dressed, had breakfast, and drove into town for shopping. On the way, I started ranting again about my hectic work schedule and all the accompanying irritations. Charlotte listened patiently. (Are you seeing a pattern here?) As we pulled into town, an older RV turned the corner in front of us. You guessed it: The same RV, and the bumper sticker still said, “Count Your Blessings.” I stopped and smiled.

Then I said aloud, “Thanks, Lord. I think I’ve got the message now.” And the rest of the trip was fun and free of complaints.

Dear Father, thank you for the many blessings you give to me every day. There are just too many to count. Amen.
