Taking It with You

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.

1 Timothy 6:10

There once was a man who worked all his life and saved his money. He loved his money more than anything else, so just before he died, he said to his wife, “Now listen, when I die, I want you to take all my money and place it in the casket with me. I want to take it with me into the afterlife.”

“You’re kidding, right?” The wife laughed, thinking he was making a joke.

“No, I’m dead serious,” he replied. He finally managed to get his wife to promise that when he died she would put all his money in the casket with him.

Eventually he died and was laid in a casket. At the funeral, his wife sat near the casket, next to her closest friend. Just before the funeral directors closed the casket at the end of the service, the wife said, “Wait just a minute, please.”

She brought a shoe box to the side of the casket, leaned over, kissed her deceased husband, and placed the shoe box next to him. The funeral directors closed and locked the casket and rolled it away to put it in the funeral car to be transported to the cemetery.

Her friend said, “I hope you weren’t crazy enough to put all his money in the casket.”

“Yes,” the wife said. “I promised him I would, and because I’m a good Christian, that’s exactly what I did.”

“You mean you put every cent of his money in the casket with him?”

“I sure did. I got it all together, put it into my bank account, and wrote him a check.”

Lord, help me to store up my treasures with you in heaven rather than here on earth. Amen.
