The Way To Heaven
The Way to Heaven
Jesus [said], “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
John 14:6
My friends will tell you that I am directionally dysfunctional. I get lost going around the block, even more traveling cross-country. The big joke is that, no matter where we’re really trying to go, if I’m driving we’ll end up in Texarkana. I read somewhere that direction dysfunction is some kind of learning disability (I guess that’s better than just being a directional num-num).
So my new best friend is Google Maps. I just love being certain that I know the way to my destination before I ever set out.
It is incredibly frustrating to be lost. Believe me, I know, because I’ve been there, done that, many times. And while it is funny to my friends, it is frightening to me at times not to know which way to go to get home.
I’m not the only one who gets lost, though. Jerome D. Engel, when conducting one of his celebrated revivals in Philadelphia, stopped a small newsboy one day and asked him the way to the nearest post office.
“It’s down the street three blocks, then turn to the left.”
“You seem to be a bright little fellow,” said Engel, a man of considerable self-esteem. “Do you know who I am?”
“Naw.”
“I am the famous preacher who is holding the revival over in the big tabernacle. If you will come to my meeting tonight, I will show you the way to heaven.”
“Aw, go on,” said the youngster, “you don’t even know the way to the post office.”
The boy was right—when you need directions to an important destination, it is vitally important to go to the right source to get those directions. And there is one source that beats Google Maps every time. Seek the Source!
Father, thank you for giving us perfect directions to get us home to heaven and eternity with you. We love your Word, Father. Help us to read it carefully. Amen.
