God’s Address

Read Ephesians 2:11-22

“What are you doing with the phone book, Erin?” asked Mom.

Jeff, who was helping with the dishes, took a plate and dried it. “She must be looking up somebody to call,” he said, then snickered. “Of course, that’s kinda hard when you can’t read yet.”

Mom smiled. “Five years old is a bit young to start calling people anyway, honey,” she said.

“Hey, Erin,” said Jeff as he put a plate in the cupboard, “you got a boyfriend you’re going to call?”

Erin looked up. “No,” she said, “I’m not calling anyone. I’m looking up an address.”

“I thought you had our address memorized,” said Mom.

“Yeah, Erin,” said Jeff. “It’s 445 Oakwood Aven—”

“I know our address!” interrupted Erin.

“Just whose address are you looking up?” asked Dad.

“I’m trying to find God’s address.”

Jeff exploded with laughter. “Erin, you’re goofier than I thought,” he said. “God doesn’t have an address! You’re wasting your time looking in there.”

“Now, I wouldn’t be too sure about that, Jeff,” said Dad. He pulled out a chair and sat down next to Erin. “Would you like me to help you?” he asked. Erin slid the telephone directory toward her father. “Well, let’s just see now,” said Dad. He riffled through the pages. “It should be several different places.” He ran his finger slowly down the page, then stopped. “Yep!” he said. “Just as I thought. It’s here all right.”

“See!” exclaimed Erin, giving Jeff a triumphant look.

“What? No way,” said Jeff. He walked to the table and peered over his father’s shoulder. “Wait a minute!” he exclaimed. “That’s our address!”

Dad sat back and smiled. “Sure, it’s our address. But God lives with us in our lives and in our home. That makes it his address, too.” Dad closed the phone book. “Hopefully anyone who enters our house will be able to tell right away that God lives here.”
