Jenny Serves Jesus

1 Samuel 1:20, 24-28; 2:11

Jenny listened attentively as her Sunday school teacher told how the boy Samuel served the Lord. “Remember,” finished Mrs. Cadwallader, “you’re never too young to serve God.”

Jenny looked down at the floor. What could a kid like me do for Jesus? she wondered. I can’t preach or teach or even sing very well.

When Sunday school was over, several children pushed hard to get out the door first. Jenny waited until the crowding was over and then walked out. “Thanks for the good story today,” she called with a smile as she left the room. Then she went to her younger sister’s classroom to pick her up.

“Change your clothes, Jenny,” said Mom when they got home. “Dinner is ready.”

The next week Jenny’s friend Lisa agreed to go along to church and Sunday school. The lesson was about Paul, who traveled all over the world serving Jesus by preaching. Jenny’s heart felt heavier and heavier. After class she asked Lisa to go after her sister while she stayed to talk to her teacher. “Mrs. Cadwallader, I can’t find any way to serve Jesus,” said Jenny.

The teacher looked surprised. “But, Jenny, I see you serving Jesus in many ways,” she said. “Today you brought your friend so that she could hear about Jesus. You’re kind and thoughtful to your little sister and to me. And when you obey your mother, you’re serving Jesus too.”

Jenny’s face brightened. “Is that really serving Jesus?” she asked. “Wow! I bet I can find more ways to serve him.”

Jesus doesn’t expect you to go out and preach or teach like an adult, but you can serve him by obeying your parents, helping others, being kind, and inviting your friends to Sunday school or Bible club. Begin serving Jesus today.
