Light

Light

Jesus said to the people, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

John 8:12

While watching some recent TV coverage of downhill skiing, I enjoyed seeing the colorful outfits of the skiers racing down the white hills. During one run the TV screen went gray, and I could see nothing. Then gradually I could make out some activity, although not very clearly. Ten or fifteen seconds later, everything was clear and bright again. The announcer explained what had happened: The skier began his run in the sun, went through a patch of dense fog, and then skied into another area of hazy mist before coming back out into the sun. As you can imagine, I enjoyed the event best when I could see it clearly.

Our lives are like that. Sin has a way of making things hazy, cloudy, or dark. We need the light of Jesus to lift the fog and darkness and help us see our way clearly. We don’t find a clearly lit path by following rules—we find it by following him. The more time we spend getting to know God through reading his Word, the more his light will shine in our hearts.

When light can easily pass through a material—a piece of glass, for example—we describe it as transparent. Materials such as waxed paper that let only some light through are translucent. Other materials, such as bricks, do not let any light pass through. These are opaque. As Christian moms, we can be transparent if we follow Jesus closely. When we follow his light, it shines through with brightness and color to those around us.

Father,

May we follow you closely so that your light will fill us and we will reflect you to our children. Amen.
