Appreciating God in the Rolling Credits

Have you ever noticed how many people it takes to make a movie? What exactly do the gaffer, key grip, and Foley artist do anyway? In some movies, the credits go on for nearly as long as the film itself. No wonder filmmakers sometimes add special bloopers, extra animations, or deleted scenes while the credits roll: they want you to stay and see all the people who worked on the film.

And what do all those hundreds of people have to show for their creative energies? Usually it’s ninety minutes of mindless entertainment. Sure, movies can be fun. But rarely does a movie challenge your thinking or change the world. In an hour or two, the lights come on, and it’s done.

When you think about that, movies make what God did at Creation even more astounding. His creative energies didn’t only change the world—they created it. He didn’t need actors or casting experts. He didn’t have a director or a producer. There was no special music, best boy, or stunt coordinator. And he didn’t need a marketing team to create a buzz.

All God had to do was speak, and the universe came into existence. “God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light” (Genesis 1:3). Wow. In the first chapter of John, we learn that God’s Son was with him at Creation. The heavenly Father and the Son worked together. So if the credits had rolled after God’s amazing display of special effects at Creation, they might have looked something like this:

Maker of the Universe—God the Father, with God the Son.

That’s it.

That humbles us in every way possible. Despite all the technology and razzle-dazzle of the best, shiniest, most incredible film, it will never have a credit of one.

Daddy-Daughter Time

The next time you watch a movie together, slow down the credits and look at some of the titles and names. By the way, the gaffer is in charge of electricity and lighting a movie, a key grip moves major pieces on the set and works with the director of photography, and a Foley artist creates the sound effects in a movie.

The next time you’re outside enjoying God’s creation or marveling at the snow or a newborn baby, pause to give God glory for all he has created. Always remind each other that we know a great and awesome God.
