How To Be A Star - The One Year Father-Daughter Devotions

How to Be a Star

Did you know the Bible contains the key for anyone who wants to be a star? You should be aware that this advice may not get you on a nationally televised singing contest. It may not land you your own reality show. You might not tally millions of views on an Internet video site. And it doesn’t guarantee a movie contract for millions of dollars.

But you’ll be a star.

How? Simple . . . just stop complaining and arguing. Paul wrote to the Christians in Philippi with some star-making advice. In Philippians 2:14-15, he says, “Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe” (NIV).

That’s the formula.

But does it work? That’s a good question. And the best answer is to give it a try. You’ve probably noticed that many people love to grumble and argue. Whether it’s about sports or clothes or politics or religion or work or schools, they (and, often, we) love to complain. Now, imagine if we, as Christians, went about our daily lives without giving in to the temptations to argue and complain. Do you think you’d be recognized? Quite simply, your actions would be totally unexpected and refreshing!

That’s the point Paul was making. When our lives in Christ make us act differently from everyone else, it gets noticed for all the best reasons. We can shine like stars in a dark world. God’s truth and the impact of his truth in our lives always create a light. And light doesn’t get swallowed up by the darkness. Light always wins. You may not get famous, but you can be a star shining brightly for God.

Daddy-Daughter Time

What are some things the two of you complain about? Help each other make lists, because sometimes we can complain without realizing it. Have fun with it . . . this isn’t meant to make you feel bad. Then the next time you or your dad start grumbling, quietly whisper, “Be a star!” as a gentle reminder to refrain from complaining or arguing.

What’s The Word?

Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life.   Philippians 2:14-16 (NIV)
