Kids’ thumbs get more exercise today than at any other time in history. How do we know? Just by looking at the number of text messages being sent.

It’s estimated that more than 2.5 billion text messages are sent every day in the United States. The average teenager sends and receives nearly 3,500 texts each month. With cell phones it’s possible to stay connected with family and friends all the time. Have you ever wished you could talk to your best friend, update your Facebook page, and text your mom—all while you’re riding your bike? Okay, that would be dangerous. But the truth is, we want to be able to communicate with who we want, for as long as we want, from wherever we want, at any time that we want.

The first cell phones showed up in the early 1970s. They were as big as a brick and weighed as much as one too. Only the rich could afford them, because they cost thousands of dollars. Today, phones are fairly cheap, and nearly five billion are being used around the world.

Cell phones come in handy when we want to talk with family or friends. But we’ve had the ability to communicate with God “wirelessly” for thousands of years. The Bible tells us to “pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere” (Ephesians 6:18).

As the world becomes more interconnected, we shouldn’t take for granted our all-access pass to the Creator of the universe. God gives us unlimited minutes and perfect Wi-Fi reception to talk with him anytime and about anything that concerns us. God wants us to look around and constantly pray to him. And as we see God answer our prayers, he becomes even more real in our lives.

Daddy-Daughter Time

Wireless technology is relatively new. If you don’t believe it, just ask your dad what he had to do when he wanted to call home from the movies. Cell phones give us a glimpse of how easy it is to pray to God. We can do it from anywhere and at any time, and he never drops our call.

Take advantage of God’s invitation to pray “at all times and on every occasion.” Start for five minutes a day and strive for a continuous conversation. Commit to communicating more with the people in your life . . . and your heavenly Father.
