How do I guard against selfish ambition?

If others have reason for confidence in their own efforts, I have even more. . . . I once thought all these things were so very important, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the priceless gain of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. Philippians 3:4, 7-8

May he give us the desire to do his will in everything and to obey all the commands, laws, and regulations that he gave our ancestors. 1 Kings 8:58

Selfish ambition fades as your ambition to serve God grows. No earthly achievement can compare to the ultimate accomplishment of having lived this life with a great love for the Lord and a desire to serve him. This brings you the greatest reward of all—eternal life with him—as well as many other enduring rewards. In fact, you must be careful that your earthly achievements don’t distract and prevent you from loving God, or you will forfeit the greatest promotion you’ll ever have! Put your energy into something that will last forever.
