How can I be God’s friend?

God’s Response

It happened just as the Scriptures say: “Abraham believed God, so God declared him to be righteous.” He was even called “the friend of God.” James 2:23

Inside the Tent of Meeting, the LORD would speak to Moses face-to-face, as a man speaks to his friend. . . . And the LORD replied to Moses, “I will indeed do what you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and you are my friend.” Exodus 33:11, 17

Friendship with the LORD is reserved for those who fear him. With them he shares the secrets of his covenant. Psalm 25:14

Think of the qualities you look for in a friend. Perhaps you would list honesty, loyalty, or availability. God desires these same qualities from you as his friend. He wants you to come to him honestly with your struggles and successes, to remain faithful and loyal to him and his Word, and to make yourself available to spend quality time with him. You fear separation from your friends—how much more should you fear separation from God? Respect him, honor him, and remain loyal to him; he will call you his friend.

God’s Promise

I no longer call you servants, because a master doesn’t confide in his servants. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. John 15:15
