Talk to Your Mountains

I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, “May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,” and it will happen. Mark 11:23

YOU’VE ENCOUNTERED MOUNTAINS. They stand in your way, seem immovable, and threaten to thwart God’s purposes for your life. Still, Jesus said to speak to them in faith. He pointed to a specific mountain—likely Herod’s palace, a man-made mountain representing the ways of this world—and told his disciples such monstrosities could be cast into the sea. All it would take is faith and words, the same kind of commands God spoke at Creation with every “Let there be . . .” According to Jesus, we were designed with a capacity to issue orders in his name.

Most of us haven’t experienced the fullness of that promise. Then again, most of us haven’t tried, at least not with persistence. Few of us have really explored the certainty of faith that is aligned with God’s purposes and spoken it over our mountains as Jesus did when he calmed storms and commanded healing. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t believe it’s possible. If Jesus said we have this ability, then it means something. We have every reason, even the obligation as his followers, to find out what this kind of certainty looks like.

As you explore the meaning of Jesus’ promise, learn to be very intentional about cultivating your faith and then lining up your words with it. Don’t just think what you believe; speak it out. You don’t have to broadcast your expectations to everyone you meet, but you should at least make sure your conversations are consistent with the things you are praying for. When we pray one thing and then utter negative words about the possibility later, we are betraying our own beliefs. The life of faith aligns our vision with our faith and words and actions. The synchronization is powerful. The more we bring every element of our faith life together, the more we find out just how powerful it can be. And the more we see unyielding mountains beginning to move.

Prayer is a powerful thing, for God has bound and tied himself thereto.
