Your Source Of Strength
Your Source of Strength
But David found strength in the LORD his God. 1 Samuel 30:6
IN DAVID’S DARKEST MOMENT between the promise God gave him and its fulfillment years later, he had nowhere to turn. Even his own men, mighty warriors and steadfast friends, wanted to kill him for putting their lives on the line for such an unreasonably long time. So David turned to God and found his strength there. We don’t know what he thought or prayed in that moment (some of the psalms about similar crises he faced may give us a clue), but his connection with God and spiritual refreshment happened at just the right time. He was able to ask for and receive God’s guidance, and he won back all that the raiders had taken. God restored David’s heart, and then David restored what he and his men had lost.
We can’t have consistent faith without knowing how to find our strength in God. We have to become settled in unsettled seasons and circumstances. We will be bombarded with global and national crises that pop up frequently, with situations and circumstances that scream contradictions to God’s will for our lives, with people’s perspectives and commentaries that undermine our faith, and with our own inner turmoil and questions that undermine it even more. Nowhere in Scripture are we promised a smooth ride. In fact, Jesus promised just the opposite (John 16:33). But he also promised that he had overcome and that we would overcome too through him. That’s where we can find our strength—in the promises, encouragement, and spiritual resources flowing into our lives and from the Holy Spirit within us. We participate in all of God’s victories by clinging to and resting in him.
Remember that the next time you face a crisis of faith, whether it comes from outside sources or deep within. There may be plenty of people in your life to encourage you in rough times. But as in David’s life, those same friends may intensify the rough times, even when they don’t intend to. You’ll have to find your strength in a more dependable source, be refreshed, and let God open your ears to his voice. Only he has the power to carry you through to the end.
Prayer has a mighty power to sustain the soul in every season of its distress and sorrow.
