God's Coaching #104

Close your eyes and imagine what it would be like to ski 100 miles per hour. The cold biting your face. Wind rushing past your ears. Shaking skis ready to skid out from under you at any moment. Adrenaline rushing through your veins as you fly down the mountain. Now keep your eyes closed and imagine doing it blind. That’s right—no safety ropes, no vision, and 100 mph.

In 2006, former British soldier Kevin Alderton set a downhill-speed record for blind skiers by reaching a speed of 100.94 mph at Les Arcs in France. The back of Kevin’s jacket said it all: “nosightnofear.” As he stood at the top of the run known as the Flying Kilometre, Kevin was focused on showing the world that his lack of sight wasn’t a barrier for his achieving an amazing record. He quickly got into a tuck and started flying down the mountain. Kevin broke 100 mph before falling and sliding 200 yards down the mountain unharmed.

What’s the Score?

Kevin grew up enjoying skiing. After he was blinded by a gang of people while he protected a woman, Kevin showed a lot of courage by continuing in the sport. On that mountain in France, it took a lot of faith for Kevin to go that fast. The only guidance he received was through radio speakers in his helmet from his coach, Norman Clarke. Kevin said the sensation of skiing that fast without being able to see was “amazing.”

Sometimes in our lives we can feel “blind.” There are situations when we’re not sure what decision to make, or we feel like it would be great to see into the future. At those points, we need to show the same faith that Kevin had. God doesn’t tell us that our lives will be easy and we’ll always know exactly what to do. But God is always there to guide us. In fact, the Bible says God’s Word is a lamp to our feet (Psalm 119:105). A lamp won’t light up a path for hundreds of yards, but it will show us the next step to take. Take that step, and then trust God to show you where to take the next.

On the Ball

Whenever you’re not sure which choice is right or what to do, turn to God’s Word. The wisdom in the Bible can show you the way. Trust God and have faith in him as you zoom through this journey called life.
