God's Coaching #133
Morgan Pressel was 12 when she first qualified for the US Women’s Open. She was the youngest golfer ever to play in the tournament, even though she was a ripe old 13 when she actually stepped onto the first tee at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in North Carolina in 2001. Morgan’s mom was there to watch—even though she had breast cancer. No one outside the family knew it then. But everyone knew by 2003 that Kathy Pressel was very sick because her cancer had returned. Still, that wasn’t enough to stop Morgan’s mom from bundling up with blankets in chilly 30-degree temps to watch her daughter play the Doherty Championship. Nothing was going to keep her from being there to support her daughter and cheer her toward her dream of being a professional golfer.
Kathy died in 2003 when Morgan was 15. It was a heartbreaking loss. But Kathy’s love and support had given Morgan the strength to pursue and achieve her dream. As soon as Morgan was 18, the LPGA welcomed her to the pro tour. In 2007, Morgan became the youngest professional golfer to win a major women’s championship. Morgan’s mother was always close to her heart, and Morgan stayed passionate about fighting breast cancer. Using golf as a platform, she raised millions of dollars toward finding a cure for the disease that took her mom’s life. She dreamed of a day when no one would lose her mother to breast cancer.
What’s the Score?
When a kid falls down, who does he run to? When a teenager experiences heartbreak, whose shoulder does she cry on? There’s a special relationship between mothers and children. No one can comfort us like our moms.
God is our heavenly Father, but he loves us like a mother, too. “I will comfort you there in Jerusalem as a mother comforts her child,” he says in Isaiah 66:13. He can hold us, understand us, and wipe away our tears even better than our moms can. God uses mothers in our lives in many, many ways, but we can turn to God and trust him even when our mothers let us down or can’t be around.
On the Ball
Show your mom today how much you love her. Give her a hug, and tell her you love her. If she is far away, call or write. If your mom is no longer a part of your life, write a letter to her or to someone who has filled that role. Thank God for his perfect love too.
