How badly would you want to beat your brother or sister in the finals of a major tournament with the whole world watching? Would you want to humiliate him? Or would you go easy on her? That was a real question for Venus and Serena Williams.

Venus and Serena faced off in the 2002 French Open finals. They were two of the best tennis players in the world. Venus held the top woman’s ranking, while Serena was ranked second in the world. They had faced each other before, but this was the first time either of them had reached the French Open finals. Both sisters normally were merciless against opponents. But they didn’t seem to have the same edge against each other. The match was actually on the sloppy side. Both players made numerous unforced errors. The momentum swung back and forth. In the end Serena beat her older sister 7–5, 6–3. She celebrated, but not as much as normal.

The sisters hugged at center court and said, “I love you.” On the winner’s podium, Venus took pictures of Serena with their mom’s camera. Then they went back to traveling the tour together—and stealing toothpaste from the other’s hotel room. After all, they were still sisters.

What’s the Score?

It’s an amazing achievement to reach No. 1 in any pro sport. Having two members of one family reach that level is almost unheard of. Venus and Serena showed the strength of their relationship by staying close even as they battled for the world’s top spot.

How well do you get along with your siblings? Psalms says, “How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!” (Psalm 133:1). That includes sisters, too. Your parents would agree with that verse. You have the ability to bring peace—or war—to your whole house. All brothers and sisters will fight sometimes, but finding the power to forgive each other can open the door to finding a best friend who lives in the same house. Take the first step to bring peace and to show appreciation for your brother or sister. Talk to your parents for some ideas if you need help.
