God's Coaching #167

If you thought cardboard was worthless, think again. In 2007, a California man paid a record $$235 million for the world’s most famous piece of cardboard—a 1909 baseball card of Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Hall of Fame second baseman.

Whoa. That’s a lot of money for something that could fit in your back pocket. Imagine if that collector had gone home and realized he had bought a fake. He probably would have been a bit upset. In the popular world of sports memorabilia, originals are important. Whether it’s trading cards, player autographs, game-worn jerseys, or actual equipment used in a contest, no collector wants to buy a knockoff. Fakes aren’t worth anything. All collectors strive for the original because originals hold their value.

What’s the Score?

Did you know you can own the world’s greatest original collectible—a priceless object worth far more than a 100-year-old baseball card? It’s true. In fact, you might even have it already. It’s the Bible! The Bible is the most valuable object on earth because it is the original, inspired Word of God. Over the centuries, there have been many people who falsely claimed to speak for God. But the Bible is the authentic message from God to us.

In Exodus 31:18, God presents the Ten Commandments to Moses. The two stone tablets were actually “inscribed by the finger of God” (NIV). In 2 Timothy 3:15-16, the apostle Paul calls the Bible “holy Scriptures” and affirms that “all Scripture is God-breathed” (NIV). The Bible is made up of 66 books—from Genesis to Revelation—and was written over a couple thousand years by about 40 men, who were all inspired by the Holy Spirit. As the apostle Peter says in 2 Peter 1:20-21: “Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.” When it comes to your faith, avoid all counterfeits and go to the original Word of God, the Bible!

On the Ball

Since the Bible is the world’s most precious original, commit to reading it every day!
