The tennis match was like two gladiators battling back and forth. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, the two top players in the world and arguably two of the best of all time, waged an epic battle on the grass court of the 2008 Wimbledon final. It just kept going. The rivalry between Roger and Rafael was already strong. Roger had won the last five Wimbledons. Rafael had won the previous four French Opens, beating Roger every time. In this match, they battled fiercely for every point. Rain delayed the match twice and probably helped each player get some rest and regain momentum.

Rafael won the first two sets 6–4, 6–4. Then Roger narrowly took the next two sets in tiebreakers 7–6, 7–6. The match went on and on, and the fifth set went to extra games. Finally, Rafael prevailed 9–7. At nearly five hours, it was the longest Wimbledon final in history. Rafael won this classic battle of endurance. What’s the Score?

Staying strong to the end was worth the cost. Both Rafael’s and Roger’s talent, dedication, and love of the game kept them going, even in one of the longest, toughest competitions of their lives. What in your life is worth enduring to the end for?

Jesus talked about endurance when he said, “The one who endures to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13). He was talking about enduring persecution and hardship. But staying strong in our faith also applies to any situation when we’re tempted to quit. Giving up often looks like the easiest way out. But when you quit, you might be missing out on God’s blessing or something he wants to teach you. Be encouraged by Jesus’ words, and stay strong.

On the Ball

Write some of your current challenges on a tennis ball. Then bounce the ball on a racket as many times as you can without letting it drop. Try to get to 100. Keep trying even if it’s tough. As you bounce, think about how you can apply endurance to your life situations.
