God's Coaching #202
If you thought riding your bike with no hands down the street was hard, just imagine the difficulty of zooming off a nearly vertical ramp and spinning around two full times. That was just one of the tricks Jamie Bestwick threw down at X Games 16. By winning his fourth-straight gold in BMX Vert, the British-born rider made X Games history. Although some of the riders matched the height that Jamie soared above the ramp, none could compete with his array of technical stunts. He nailed an alley-oop 540, tossed in a few other 540 variations, and completed tailwhip flairs with ease. The smoothness and the complexity of his ride earned him 90 points—10 more than his closest competitor.
His victory at the 2010 X Games gave him seven gold medals in BMX Vert. In a radio interview before the X Games, Jamie had said, “I respect all the guys that I ride against, and I have a great time regardless of what the outcome is. But I put a lot of work into my riding. . . . I want Vert to look as good as it can be so that it will inspire a new generation of Vert riders.”
What’s the Score?
Jamie wanted to be a role model with his BMX Vert ramp riding. Soaring nearly 20 feet above the edge of the ramp made his hard work obvious. He respected the sport and the other riders enough to put in the effort to be the best. By being a leader, working hard, and showing respect, Jamie made X Games history.
In the Old Testament, the prophet Micah tells God’s people three things they need to do. He says that you’re required “to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). By showing these three characteristics, you can live powerfully for God. You don’t have to do a lot of stunts and draw attention to yourself. You must simply do what is right, love mercy, and humbly follow God. Keep those three things in mind as you go about your daily life, and people will take notice.
On the Ball
Memorize Micah 6:8. Whenever you’re not sure how to act, keep that verse in mind. It’ll go a long way in helping you live the way God wants you to.
