Who Needs To Know It’s Going To Be Okay
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.”
ONE SUNNY AFTERNOON IN LOS ANGELES, I sat in my office and looked out the window just as the mail truck pulled to a stop at the end of our quiet cul-de-sac. The world looked bright in a land known for possibilities, but a dark cloud of anxiety hung over my head. When God called Jared and me to California, He didn’t tell us how He intended to finance our missionary journey. We stepped out in faith, trusting Him to provide, and He met us each step of the way. But it was a season that continually tested our faith.
On that afternoon, as I watched the mail carrier open our box, I wasn’t sure how we were going to pay our rent. Money was coming, but it would arrive in our bank account well past the due date of some very important bills. I thought back to stories my momma had told me about finding money on the ground when she needed it most and receiving unexpected checks in the mail at just the right moment.
So as I watched the mail truck pull away, I hummed a little song to myself and whispered a prayer to the Lord, “Believing for checks in the mail . . . checks in the mail. . . . You can do all things, Lord. Thank You for checks in the mail.” And wouldn’t you know that tucked inside that ordinary stack of bills, coupon mailers, and advertisements was an unexpected envelope that surprised Jared and me in the best way.
It was the check that wasn’t supposed to arrive until the next month. It had come three weeks early! In that moment, God reminded us again that it was all going to be okay.
Have you ever experienced a time when you needed God to show up for you again? Perhaps He made a way before, but you needed to know once more that it was going to be okay.
Remember the story of Elijah and the widow living in Zarephath? When the woman gave Elijah some of the last of her food, God provided miraculously for her, her son, and the prophet throughout the drought. But sometime later, her son became very ill and died.
In her grief, the woman demanded of Elijah: “What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?” (1 Kings 17:18). This boy was dearly loved by his mother, who had lost so much. She had lived through the trauma of believing their food would run out. She had seen God come through in the past, but the loss of her son was an unspeakable tragedy.
Elijah, too, was filled with sorrow and questions, but he didn’t despair. Instead, he took the boy in his arms and withdrew to pray for him, crying out...
“LORD my God, let this boy’s life return to him!” The LORD heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived. Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, “Look, your son is alive!”
Momma, just like the widow, you may have noticed that one thing rises to the surface every time you pray. You have seen God move in miraculous ways in the past, even if you didn’t recognize those moments as miracles. You saw Him provide, bring peace, and give you strength. He has met your needs again and again, but perhaps you are facing another impossible situation. You need to know that God will make a way and it will all turn out okay. Tonight we join our cries with yours, saying “Lord my God, step into this situation and let life return.”
Tonight we pray for the momma who needs to know it’s all going to be okay. Lord, she has so many areas where she needs You to intervene, but one particular thing often comes to the surface of her heart, causing her to question if it really is going to be all right. Tonight we ask You to remind her that You always work everything out for her good . . . just because You love her. Quiet every lie that causes her to question Your goodness. Help her believe it’s going to be okay. Give her peace.
We ask in Jesus’s name, amen.
Jesus, thank You for being my ever-present help. Tonight please show me how this one thing will be okay:
