BETTER THAN “BUT”

Better Than “But”

Moses said to the LORD, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”

Exodus 4:10

Read that verse again. Can you believe that Moses, a great father of our faith, started out this way? Three verses later he said to almighty God, “Please send someone else” to talk to Pharaoh about letting God’s people leave Egypt (v. 13). But God had much bigger, better plans than Moses could have imagined.

When have you said something similar to God about what you know He’s called you to do?

• “But, God, I don’t know enough about the issue.”

• “But, God, I’m not skilled enough to get involved.”

• “But, God, I already have enough on my plate.”

• “But, God, I have a family.”

• “But, God, it’s too dangerous.”

But, God . . . Spend a few minutes with God thinking about why you might be responding this way. Ask Him to transform your heart and guide you, as He guided Moses, into the freedom that comes with embracing His plan.

Lord, please forgive me when I answer Your call with a “but,” and lead me onward into Your good plans.
