Feeling No Shame

Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Genesis 2:25

The Bible tells us that in the beginning Adam and Eve “felt no shame.” They were created perfectly and set in a perfect environment. But when they sinned, and sin entered the world for the first time, so did shame—and they felt shame for the first time.

God placed this key point in Genesis because there’s a freeing truth for us to grasp. God wanted us to know that shame was never His plan for us—that the perfect state for humankind is a shame-free life. After Adam and Eve sinned, God knew that shame would be one of our Enemy’s most harmful weapons, so He gave us the ultimate defense: Jesus. “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame” (Romans 10:11). He makes us clean, He teaches us truth, and He restores us to Himself, just like humankind was originally created to be.

So the next time you feel the dark pull of secret shame or embarrassment, or that feeling of just not being enough, remember you weren’t created to live that way. Open your heart to Jesus, and He will bring light to the dark places. After all, He knows everything, and He loves you fully.
