Opened Eyes

“Love each other as I have loved you.”

Years ago, I used to change TV channels when the intensity of bombings and genocide in news reports became unbearable. But not anymore. As my worldview broadened and my empathy for humankind grew, I realized that those people in the middle of their crises can’t turn off their pain as easily as we turn off our TVs—and watching what was happening in their world was my prompting to pray for them wholeheartedly. I realized that as the world grows darker, I need to always remember who these trapped and suffering people are: people like you and me made in God’s image.

God knows their names, their pain, their fears, even their dreams—and God wants us to make a difference in their lives. Let’s remember what Jesus said: “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). That means, do something, not nothing. When you see a circumstance you just can’t bear to watch or think about any longer, pray. Ask for guidance. Even ask what you can do specifically. Then do it—and watch the Lord lead you, equip you, and guide you into the role He has for you: the role of loving others as He has all over the world.

Thank You for opening my eyes to the great needs in Your world. Please show me where You want me to serve.
