The Role Of A Lifetime

The Role Of A Lifetime

Put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

Ephesians 4:24

I have an actress friend who amazes me. She plays so many different roles, yet she can keep them all straight! How does she keep from running out onstage and delivering the wrong lines in the wrong costume? Despite whatever role she’s currently playing, she never loses sight of who she really is—her true identity.

Just like this actress, every single one of us has many different roles to fulfill every day—and they can change at any moment! We are pulled in so many different directions by people around us and their expectations or needs.

The only way we’re able to “morph” from role to role and not end up mixing them all up is by doing what my actress friend does: remembering who we are at our core. In other words, who you are is not determined by what you do. Your do is not your who! You are more than just a function. Who you really are can be found only in Christ. Not in gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, education level, or career status. It lies in who you are in Christ—beloved, saved, and wonderfully made.

Jesus, thank You for establishing my identity in You, beyond any role I play. I am glad to be known and loved by You.
