Willing To Serve

There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.

1 Corinthians 12:5

I’ll always remember a letter I received from a social work professional implying that I needed training at her university before I would be qualified to work with young people. At the time I was directing a youth program that—by God’s grace—seemed to be thriving. If I were to continue long-term in youth services, though, she said I needed formal training.

It is wise to consider such input—the source, the motive—and get counsel from trusted people of God. The woman had a point: technically, I was unqualified to do the very thing I was doing, so I considered resigning. Yet something inside me—I’m convinced it was God’s voice—said, No, don’t quit.

To the world, I looked unqualified, but God has blessed my work for more than twenty-five years since that letter came. It seems God cared more about my willingness to serve than my qualifications.

Many ministries in God’s kingdom do require a baseline of training, such as music, medicine, law, accounting, and art. But once you recognize the role God has called you to, seek training if you need it, and serve with an unrelenting heart. But remember, He can work wonders with willingness. And ultimately, He’s the One who enables you to serve. He’s the one who qualifies you.

Lord, make me open to Your call, and show me when to sharpen my skills so I can serve You with excellence.
