Rest In His Presence

Rest in His Presence

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.’” (Matthew 11:28-30, NLT)

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” (Psalm 62:1-2, NIV)

“He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the LORD will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31, NLT)

In our fast-paced world, it can feel impossible to find rest. We are constantly pulled in multiple directions, juggling responsibilities, and dealing with the pressure to do more. But amidst the busyness, there is an invitation from Jesus: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). This rest isn’t just physical; it’s a deep, soul-satisfying peace that only he can offer.

Resting in God’s presence means we stop striving. It’s easy to think we must constantly be working, achieving, or earning, but true rest comes when we lay down our burdens and trust God’s care. In Psalm 62:1-2, David declares, “Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”

God’s rest is different from the rest the world offers. The world promises rest in vacations or breaks, but those things often fail to fully restore us. The rest that God offers is a rest for our souls—a rest that renews us even in the midst of life’s demands. Isaiah 40:29-31 reminds us that God gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. When we wait on the Lord, we find renewed strength, and we can run without growing weary.

But how do we practically enter into this rest? How do we cultivate a life of peace amid our busy schedules and constant demands?

Here are three steps to help you rest in God’s presence:

  1. Surrender your to-do list: The first step to resting in God is to surrender the need to control everything. Often, our minds are filled with worries about what we still need to do. Take a moment to pause and lay down your to-do list before God. Trust that he is in control of the things you cannot manage.
  2. Seek solitude: Jesus often withdrew to quiet places to pray and connect with his Father (Mark 1:35). Set aside intentional time to be still in God’s presence, whether in nature, in your home, or in a quiet space. In these moments, allow yourself to experience his peace and listen for his voice.
  3. Reflect on God’s faithfulness: When we reflect on God’s past faithfulness, we are reminded that he is trustworthy and present with us in every season. Take time to recall moments where he has shown up for you and let that fill your heart with gratitude and peace.

Rest in God’s presence doesn’t always look like taking a nap or stepping away from responsibilities. It’s a peace that comes when we trust that he is in control, he loves us deeply, and he will provide what we need. True rest comes when we stop striving and simply rest in the arms of our Savior.

In what areas of your life do you need to rest and trust God more deeply? How can you create space for his peace to fill your heart today?

Prayer

Lord, I come to you with a weary heart. Help me to lay down my burdens and rest in your presence. Teach me to trust you with the things I cannot control, and give me strength when I am weak. Thank you for being my refuge and my rest. I surrender my to-do list to you today and invite your peace to renew my soul. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
