Be Careful What You Look At - In the Evening When I Rest

Be Careful What You Look At

Lord, does it really matter what I look at if I’m not acting on it?

The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then I asked the woman, “What have you done?”

Genesis 3:6, 13

How can I be more intentional about what I look at?

If your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell. Lift your eyes to me, your God, enthroned in heaven. Keep looking to me for mercy. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned.

Matthew 18:9; Psalm 123:1-2; Philippians 4:8-9

What can I pray to guide what I choose to look at?

I will be careful to live a blameless life—when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home. I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar.

Psalm 101:2-3

What we allow ourselves to look at and linger on deeply affects our thoughts and actions. Take an inventory of the shows you watch, the books you read, the images you’re allowing into your mind. What messages are you subtly allowing to influence you? Do they align with the truth from God’s Word? What might be having the greatest influence on the way you think and act? Become intentional about filtering the images you allow into your eyes and mind.
