Why God Makes Promises - In the Morning When I Rise

Why God Makes Promises

Lord, how do you back up your promises?

By my divine power, I have given you everything you need for living a godly life. You have received all of this by coming to know me. And because of my glory and excellence, I have given you great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share my divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.

2 Peter 1:3-4

How do your promises help me grow spiritually?

In view of all this, make every effort to respond to my promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of me.

2 Peter 1:5-8

What can I pray to claim your promises to me?

Lord, you keep your covenant and show unfailing love to all who walk before you in wholehearted devotion.

2 Chronicles 6:14

God gives his promises so we can respond in trust and build practices that nourish our souls. This morning, create a spiritual practice that is your response to a promise from God. Try to practice it all day (or all week!). For example, practice daily forgiveness based on the promise in Luke 6:37: “Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.” Or commit your day to the Lord with this command from Psalm 37:5: “Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you.”
