God around a Fire Pit

You are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9

Halloween has become quite a thing at our house over the past few years. Although I know people have many different ideas about the celebration of Halloween, we’ve decided as a family that it can be a wonderful way for us to get to know our neighbors even better.

Each year we buy full-size candy bars, as well as supplies for s’mores and hot chocolate, and we set up our fire pit right in the middle of our driveway. From late afternoon through the evening, we welcome kids of all ages and their parents to warm themselves by the fire and help themselves to a treat. This has become an event that our family looks forward to every year. We’ve had hundreds of visitors, many of whom come year after year, remembering the house that has the fire and good treats.

Although there are things about Halloween I dislike (for example, I hate anything that’s scary), we’ve talked with our children about the opportunity Halloween gives us to extend kindness while also getting to know our neighbors better. Our children realize this is another way we can reach out to our community, showing the love and light of Jesus by welcoming others to our home.

We don’t have to like everything about a holiday or celebration to find ways as Christians to share the love of Christ with those around us. The truth is that we are a chosen people, God’s very own possession, created to show the goodness of God to others. Looking for opportunities to engage the world around us is important if we want to make an impact on others’ lives. Every kind step we take opens the door for relationships to grow.
