Searching After God - The One Year Daily Prayer

Searching after God

For those who are righteous,

the way is not steep and rough.

You are a God who does what is right,

and you smooth out the path ahead of them.

LORD, we show our trust in you by obeying your laws;

our heart’s desire is to glorify your name.

All night long I search for you;

in the morning I earnestly seek for God.

For only when you come to judge the earth

will people learn what is right.

Isaiah 26:7-9

In every situation, the Lord God is the one we need. Isaiah knew this truth intimately. Isaiah wanted God to smooth out the path ahead for him. The way may have appeared steep and rough; but it wasn’t impassable for those aligned with the Holy One. The world around Isaiah seemed to be going from bad to worse; but he cultivated an attitude of waiting for God. He knew the power to face every situation resided in God alone. Likewise, the writer of Revelation ended the record of his visions of coming apostasy and wrath with the same heartfelt cry: “Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).

We, too, should nurture a longing for God to rescue us from the sin within and around us. He is our ultimate hope.

  • O Lord, all night long I search for you . . .
