Embarrassed By Sin
Read Proverbs 30
If you have been a fool by being proud or plotting evil, cover your mouth in shame.
Proverbs 30:32
Our attitude after we have sinned determines if we will commit the sin again. Do we laugh off the guilt, talk ourselves into apathy, or deny the consequences? Or are we embarrassed about the way we faltered, storing a memory of what the guilt felt like deep in our minds? If we do the latter, the memory of the guilt we felt over our sin will come to the front of our minds when we ponder committing the sin again.
This proverb is discipline for our disobedience, but it is also a declaration of love. God foresees us acting foolishly. He is aware we will mess up. In fact, he granted us salvation knowing that we were going to sin even after we received it. He loves us enough to keep getting us back on track. He hates pride and he hates sin. God wants us to avoid committing the same sin twice. It’s our responsibility to see that we don’t.
We are not forbidden to speak about past sins and mistakes. They can often be helpful illustrations when we are teaching others. But there must be no hint of pride for those things that have been our downfall in the past.
A WORD FOR TODAY
Shame can lead to repentance.
Today, Lord, I won’t be cocky about my sin. I will keep my attitude humble.
