Exposing What Is Hidden

Most people agree that pride is a bad thing. We don’t like people who are full of themselves, toot their own horns, or step on toes. It’s a character trait we’d all like to avoid.

But the real power of pride is in its concealment. In other words, most people who are proud are the last to realize it. We disguise it with terms such as self-confidence or standing our ground. When someone suggests we might be prideful, we often call them weak or spiteful for thinking it.

Our pride is typically noticeable to others but hidden from us. The way to learn more humility is to place people around you who you trust enough to believe when they call you on it.

Most bad character traits, when exposed to the light, have far less power. Be humble enough to admit that you may be proud in ways you’re unable to see.

Do you see a person wise in their own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for them. —Proverbs 26:12
