If You Bend, You Will Not Break

If You Bend, You Will Not Break

Gumby was a character in children’s television from the 1950s onward. Many children, given a Gumby doll, enjoyed stretching his rubber limbs into poses that would send most people to the hospital. This was so common that the name Gumby is now interchangeable with the adjective flexible.

When it comes to change, most of us aren’t that flexible. We want our path to be straightforward, and when something gets in our way, we often demand that the obstacle be removed rather than finding a way around it.

Most of your path to what matters will include steep hills, deep valleys, rocks, and downed trees. It will require you to stop or shift gears, sometimes to turn around or take a different path.

No one expects you to be Gumby, but in flexing your attitude by small degrees, you’ll find more and more range to bend in ways you’d have never thought possible.

“But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” —Matthew 7:14
