Just For Today
Just for Today
A phrase is added to the Serenity Prayer in many recovery group meetings: just for today. It’s actually a variation on the longer version of Niebuhr’s prayer: “living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time.”
You don’t have to be addicted to alcohol or drugs for life to feel unmanageable. Facing your problems, surrendering, finding peace within yourself, working for peace with others, and giving control to God are the keys to peace. But none of this happens overnight, so even if you’re pursuing these strategies, you can still find yourself overwhelmed.
God has a job and you have a job. Your main job is to focus on the peace of today—very often, on peace in the next moment.
Have the wisdom to know that tomorrow will worry about itself. The time for your peace and serenity is now.
“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.”
—Matthew 6:34
