Trading One Master for Another

The word slave isn’t exactly pleasant to our modern ears. It’s linked to a horrible history. Human beings were kidnapped and made to live in forced labor at the hands of cruel masters.

While this type of slavery has always existed, the concept once had a broader scope. In ancient times, a slave could also be someone who worked to pay off a debt or to make payment for a crime.

When it comes to our freedom, the Bible addresses both types of slavery. Our sinful compulsions are a cruel master we didn’t choose to serve. However, we get to choose God. And He is a good Master. He still controls us, but it’s our choice to have Him do so. This choice leads to our freedom.

It may not feel very American to think that anyone should be your master, but this is the key to freeing yourself from your enslavement to a life that doesn’t matter.

Now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. —Romans 6:22
