Independence For Your Soul
Independence for Your Soul
On a warm day in July, America sets out blankets and fires up barbecues to celebrate the moment our Founding Fathers proclaimed that they had a God-given right to be free from the tyrannies of England.
We are now free to worship, to speak our minds, and to live where we like. And that matters. But there are other tyrannies that still imprison us: prejudice, hatred, selfishness, guilt, depression, recklessness. As Americans, we may seem to be perfectly free but still walk in hopeless bondage.
When it comes to such deeper areas of oppression, it’s important to separate our ideas of political freedom from emotional and spiritual freedom. Only God can help us rise out of our selfishness and pain to truly walk in the freedom that comes from within.
As Americans, we are free to govern ourselves. But our souls can only be free when they’re governed by God.
It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. —Galatians 5:1
