Get The Best

Elisha summoned Gehazi. “Call the child’s mother!” he said. And when she came in, Elisha said, “Here, take your son!” She fell at his feet and bowed before him, overwhelmed with gratitude. Then she took her son in her arms and carried him downstairs.

THE BIBLE TELLS A STORY of a rich woman who built the prophet Elisha a room in her home. One day her only son grabbed his head in pain and collapsed. The woman held her son on her lap as he died. For a parent, this is a crisis of great proportion. There was nothing this woman could do to help her son. The problem was far beyond her own limited power or ability. What did she do? She promptly went to someone who could help her:

When she came to the man of God at the mountain, she fell to the ground before him and caught hold of his feet. Gehazi began to push her away, but the man of God said, “Leave her alone. She is deeply troubled.” . . .

Elisha returned with her. . . .

He went in alone and shut the door behind him and prayed to the LORD. Then he lay down on the child’s body, placing his mouth on the child’s mouth, his eyes on the child’s eyes, and his hands on the child’s hands. And as he stretched out on him, the child’s body began to grow warm again! Elisha got up, walked back and forth across the room once, and then stretched himself out again on the child. This time the boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes!

This woman in need went after the best help she could think of. She needed someone who had the ability and the desire to help her. We can learn an important lesson from this woman’s example. When we face a crisis, we can go to the One with the greatest ability to help and the greatest desire. Our heavenly Father’s heart wants his children to cry out for his help when their path takes them through difficulties. We can find no better help and no more loving heart than his. When you’re in a tight spot, look for help with a heart.
