“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

Luke 19:10

Have you ever thought about the fact that whatever you’ve lost is always in the last place you look? True—because then we stop looking, right? Similarly, Jesus stops looking only after he finds the one he seeks.

Jesus, for instance, had noticed Zacchaeus—the tax collector, the sinner—and invited himself to this wealthy man’s home. The people who heard Jesus’ plan began muttering: Jesus was going to a sinner’s house? Aware of their self-righteousness, Jesus explained that he had come “to seek and to save the lost.”

Zacchaeus was definitely lost: this Jewish traitor worked on behalf of Rome and stole from his own people by requiring them to pay more taxes than Rome did. Yet when Jesus entered his life, Zacchaeus became unlost, repenting of his sin and promising to pay back four times what he had wrongly taken.

Jesus went to Zacchaeus when he was lost. And he will go to your loved ones who are lost. When he finds them, he’ll rejoice in their salvation as he did in yours.

Lord, thank you that you sought me when I was lost in my sin and rescued me.
