Beautiful Word Devotional #135

Everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved.

Romans 10:13

What a far-reaching promise from God! Not some of the people. Not the select few who are pious enough. Not the popular crowd. Everyone!

But what exactly does it mean to call on the name of the Lord? Name is synonymous with nature or character. So when we call upon the Lord’s name, we are calling upon his character.

And the character of Jesus was spotless, sinless. He was perfect,—to the point of dying on the cross for us “while we were still sinners” (Romans 5:8).

Just as the word everyone brings deep comfort, so do the words will be. The apostle Paul was making a definitive statement: salvation was sure—and not because of anything you did but because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Even if you feel beaten down or totally unworthy of God’s rescue of you from the consequences of your sin, the truth is, you are saved because of God’s faithfulness and grace.

Lord, you are gracious and forgiving, and I thank you for saving me from the eternal consequences of my sin, amen.
