Beautiful Word Devotional #164

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?”

Job 38:4

Job had lost nearly everything—his herds, his crops, his children, and more—and he didn’t understand why God would allow him to experience such pain. God, however, explain himself. Instead, he asked Job some questions: “Where were you when?”

Those four words introduced a series of questions in which God listed some of the amazing things he created. Did Job understand what God understood? Did Job have the power God had? These questions silenced Job. Maybe at first glance, God’s intense questioning seems cruel, but God was showing that he is bigger than Job, that his understanding, power, and knowledge are greater than Job’s . . . and ours.

Our human minds are infinitely smaller than God’s. We can’t comprehend how the world works, nor can we know how God’s plan for our lives will unfold. So we may not fully understand why we’re suffering. But one day—and for eternity—we will marvel at the beauty of God’s perfect plan.

Lord, help me trust you and rest in your plan especially when life is confusing and painful, amen.
