God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Romans 5:8

What indescribable love God has for us! God showed—with the gift of his Son’s very life—his affection and compassion for a group of folks who wanted nothing to do with him, who actively found ways to rebel against him. As King of the universe, he could have let us go our own way or destroyed us, but instead he chose to love us. And he showed his love by sacrificing his Son on our behalf.

And all history is marked by this remarkable act of sacrifice. No matter what your emotions tell you about God, especially when life is disappointing, the indisputable fact of God’s kindness was demonstrated when Jesus hung on the cross.

Jesus didn’t die for those deserving or worthy of his love. Instead, totally undeserving of God’s wrath, Jesus died for those who didn’t even comprehend what his sacrifice was accomplishing.

You don’t need to fret about your standing before him. Your place has been made secure by his outrageous love.

Lord, thank you for loving me before I even knew I needed it, amen.
