He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.

Isaiah 53:2

King Jesus, the long-awaited Messiah, was not what the nation of Israel expected.

In Jesus’ day, the Jewish people were looking for a powerful king who would free them from Roman oppression. Focused on that, they had trouble making sense of Isaiah’s words about the suffering servant.

When Jesus came on the scene, these words of Isaiah’s prophecy proved true. An ordinary carpenter, growing up in the unremarkable town of Nazareth, Jesus didn’t seek recognition from influential leaders who would back his cause. Instead, Jesus reached out to other ordinary people with words of truth, freedom, and love.

This is good news for you. Why? Because Jesus was ordinary, we can relate to him. Because he encountered in his earthly life all the things we face, he can be our trusted Friend. And know this truth: our ordinary Savior loves ordinary you extraordinarily.

Lord, you may have looked ordinary to the fishermen you hung around with, but you are an extraordinary Savior! I love you, amen.
