Beautiful Word Devotional #287

Rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.

1 Samuel 15:23

Divination and idolatry are heinous sins, but here Samuel reminded us that rebellion and arrogance are just as bad.

First, rebellion is having a heart contrary to God. It is knowing what he wants us to do, then actively going the other way, choosing to disobey. It’s devaluing what he values and demeaning what he holds precious.

Second, arrogance is—simply put—pride. You are convinced that your way is the only way to live life, that your perspective is the only way to look at a situation. Arrogant people often make fun of others, actively promote themselves, and even think they are smarter than God!

The remedy for rebellion and arrogance is viewing ourselves correctly. We are humans, made of dust, finite and needy, sinful by nature, in need of a Savior. When we humbly acknowledge who we are in comparison to our holy God, arrogance melts away, and rebellion no longer seems wise.

Lord, thank you that looking to you can free me from rebellion and arrogance, amen.
