For Praying Through Songs - Called to Pray
For Praying through Songs DO YOU KNOW that singing is a type of prayer? The book of Psalms is comprised of 150 prayer-songs, and scholars have counted at least 30 others throughout the Bible. If we define prayer as our conversations with God, it makes sense that singing would qualify. After Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison, they prayed through hymns. Acts 16 states, “At midnight Paul and Silas praying, were singing hymns to God . . . and suddenly a great earthquake came, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken, . . . all the doors [were opened], and . . . the bands were loosed” (verses 25-26, YLT). Oh, yes. Prayer-songs did all of that! You don’t need the most majestic voice to pray through melodies. God filters your voice through the sincerity and intentions of your heart. Psalm 95:1 instructs, “Sing to the LORD!” That is, sing no matter how good or bad you sound. Serenade God through hymns, psalms, or made-up tunes that communicate whatever is in your heart. Come, let us sing to the LORD! Heaven awaits the songs of my heart. Dear Lord, I lift my voice to sing your praises; I sing these melodies to draw closer to you. May the sounds from my heart bring you joy; may you hear my adoration and heartfelt love. Though my voice is weak and far from perfect, your grace listens and covers the flaws. Yes, I will sing because you are worthy; I will sing unto you because you are my God. In Jesus’ name, amen. “Serenade God.”STRENGTH IN THE WORD
